With Truphone the iPhone™ Takes on the Blackberry
Note from FbNewman: This guest post is from SarahB, a college student who was recently introduced to VoIP on her iPhone. Her excitement is a great example of how VoIP technology is making communication easier and less expensive while simultaneously expanding the functionality of our favorite technology devices.
Finally the iPhone™ has something that the Blackberry does not! You have no idea how happy I was with the introduction of Truphone. Truphone is a mobile VoIP/internet telephony operator. It is a free application that lets you make international mobile calls from your own phone over the internet at incredibly low rates. Basically with this application I can make and receive free calls to and from any connected Truphone or Google Talk™ user, I can make cheap international calls to any landline or mobile phone, and I can Instant Message my friends who have MSN Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger™, Google Talk or AIM. For me this is huge. As a proponent of the iPhone™ in the iPhone™ vs. the ‘crack berry’ debate, I finally have new ammo to use against my friends who have joined the dark side.
Basically how I understand the Truphone application is that it works by routing calls over the internet. So whenever I am connected to Wi-Fi, I can make and receive calls to and from other connected Truphone or Google Talk users for free, in addition to being able to make low cost calls worldwide to any landline or mobile phone.
Truphone for the iPhone™ is the must-have app for anyone. It now works with the iPod touch as well. Honestly given how easy it is to download, install, and use; I don’t understand what the Blackberry has that is better. BBM-ing is going to become a thing of the past, given that the Truphone application lets me G-chat , use MSN Messenger with my abroad friends, and AIM for what I term my ‘behind the times friends’.
Another huge plus for me is that since Truphone routes calls over the internet, my service is always reliable. With Truphone I only ever pay for the calls I make, which is important for a college student on a budget. I like that I only have to buy credit online and re-fill when I’m running low. There are no monthly line rentals, or extra data plan costs. Calls between connected Nokia, iPhone™ and iPod touch Truphone users are always completely FREE. From wherever, to wherever.
So to Blackberry followers I say get with the times, once again Apple has triumphed.
